At The Clever Clown, we believe the best ideas come from being smart enough to do the work properly, and human enough to make the process enjoyable. A clever clown might look playful from the outside — but underneath, every move is deliberate.

We help growing businesses improve the way they work: fixing messy processes, choosing the right tools, connecting systems, and building practical software where off-the-shelf products don't quite fit.

No jargon. No theatre. No 60-page PowerPoint decks that gather dust.

Just clear thinking, useful systems, and work that makes your business easier to run.

What we believe

Three things we won't budge on

Tools should serve the business

Most companies don't need more software. They need the right software, set up properly, used by the right people, for the right reasons.

We start by understanding how your business actually works: the handovers, spreadsheets, workarounds, bottlenecks, duplicated effort and daily frustrations. Then we help you decide whether to improve what you already have, connect existing tools, or build something more tailored.

The answer isn't always "new software". Sometimes the smartest solution is simpler than that.

Plain English beats jargon

If we can't explain a recommendation in one clear sentence, it's probably the wrong recommendation.

We keep things simple, honest and understandable. You'll know what we're doing, why we're doing it, what it will cost, and what trade-offs are involved. No buzzwords. No mystery. No hiding behind technical language.

You should own what we build

We don't believe in vendor lock-in, black boxes, or systems only one person understands.

If we build something for you, you should own it properly: clear documentation, clean handover, sensible structure, and no unnecessary dependency on us. We'd rather you call us because you want to, not because you have to.

The people

Who you actually work with

No account managers. No hand-offs to people you've never met. No work disappearing into a faceless delivery team. The people who scope your project are the people who do the work.

We're a small, hands-on team with backgrounds in operations management, systems integration and software engineering. Between us, we've worked across retail, professional services, healthcare, manufacturing, SaaS and other growing business environments.

That breadth matters, because most business problems aren't completely unique. The same patterns appear again and again: duplicated admin, poor visibility, disconnected systems, unclear ownership, spreadsheets doing too much, and teams relying on goodwill to keep things moving.

We help spot those patterns, untangle them, and build something better.

Who we work with

Growing businesses whose systems are starting to creak

We work with small and mid-sized businesses across the UK, typically with around 10 to 250 staff, who've grown to the point where their systems, spreadsheets and processes are starting to creak.

We're particularly useful for:

  • Founders who know the business has outgrown its current way of working
  • Operations teams dealing with too much manual admin
  • Finance leaders who need better visibility and cleaner data
  • Service businesses trying to join up sales, delivery, billing and reporting
  • Teams using multiple tools that don't talk to each other properly

You don't need to arrive with a technical brief. You just need to know that something is harder than it should be.

Our principles

Six things we won't compromise on

Clarity

Plain language, clear scope and honest trade-offs. You'll always know where things stand, what's being worked on, and what decisions need to be made.

Pragmatism

We choose the simplest tool that works, not the shiniest one. Boring technology is often the best technology — especially when people rely on it every day.

Ownership

What we build, you own: code, documentation, structure and process. We hand things over properly, so your business isn't trapped inside someone else's mystery box.

Curiosity

We listen before we recommend. Most "tech problems" are actually process problems in disguise, and we want to understand the real issue before suggesting the solution.

Discipline

Where possible, we work with fixed scope and fixed price, so risk doesn't quietly move to your side. Clear boundaries make better projects.

Humour

The work is serious. The meetings don't have to be. People do better work when they can be honest, relaxed and human with each other.

The name

Why "The Clever Clown"?

Because the best problem-solvers don't always look like traditional consultants. They ask better questions. They spot the thing everyone else missed. They make complicated ideas feel simple. They bring energy into difficult conversations. They know when to be serious and when to lighten the room.

That's what we aim to do.

Smart enough to solve the problem.
Human enough to make the process enjoyable.
